Chicago Public Schools reported 48,700 students signed up for at least one high school sport during the 2025-26 year, a 7 percent rise from two seasons earlier.
The increase arrives as families weigh after-school schedules against rising costs for club teams and gym memberships across the city. District athletic directors say the numbers reflect both recovery from pandemic disruptions and uneven access to facilities in different neighborhoods.
Track and field drew 9,200 participants this spring, the highest total since 2018, with strong showings at Lane Tech College Prep on the North Side and at Simeon Career Academy on the South Side. The Chicago Park District added evening slots at the Humboldt Park field house and at the 31st Street Harbor track to handle overflow from school teams. Cross country also climbed, with 3,400 runners registered for fall meets, many training along the lakefront path between Montrose and Diversey.
Football and basketball held steady at roughly 6,800 and 5,900 participants respectively, while girls volleyball grew by 12 percent to 4,100 athletes. Schools in the Near West Side reported the sharpest gains, tied to new weight-room hours funded through a 2024 CPS facilities bond.
The district charges $175 per sport for the regular season, with waivers available for families below certain income thresholds. Participation rates remain highest in Lincoln Park and Lake View zip codes, where students average 1.8 sports per year, compared with 1.1 in Austin and Roseland. A CPS internal memo dated June 12 noted that schools within a half-mile of a Chicago Park District field posted 22 percent higher retention between fall and spring seasons.
Next year registration opens July 28 at each high school athletic office. Families can also sign up through the district website or at the nearest Park District field house for summer conditioning clinics priced at $45 for six weeks.
