Chicago Launches 20+ Smart City Programs Using Sensors and Open Data
The city pushes forward with more than 20 smart-city programs as Array of Things, smart lighting and open-data platforms lay the foundation for future urban innovation.

Chicago is running more than 20 smart-city programs, and the next wave of products and developments is taking shape around three core pillars: sensor networks, intelligent streetlights and open data. The Array of Things project, which plans to install approximately 500 modular sensor nodes on downtown light poles, is collecting real-time data on air quality, noise, temperature, traffic and water levels for both research and public use.
The data pipeline is already influencing how city services are delivered. Open data serves as the foundation of the smart-city strategy, with over 600 datasets available publicly. The WindyGrid platform integrates 14 data sources for emergency and city monitoring, giving operators a single dashboard to coordinate responses.
Smart Streets and Smart LEDs
The Smart Streets Pilots Ordinance, passed in March 2023, authorized two downtown pilots aimed at improving traffic safety, protecting pedestrians and bicyclists, and speeding up public transit. Those pilots are now testing real-world conditions for connected infrastructure that could later be expanded citywide.
Meanwhile, the large-scale smart LED lighting modernization is further along. Chicago has already replaced 85% of its existing streetlights with smart LEDs. The project is projected to save taxpayers $100 million over 10 years and earn an estimated $35 million in energy efficiency rebates. Each light pole equipped with an LED fixture becomes a potential node for additional sensors, creating a backbone for future applications.
What Comes Next
With the sensor network still being installed and the smart lighting upgrade nearing completion, the city is positioned to layer on new uses for the data streams. The Array of Things nodes are modular, meaning new sensors can be swapped in as technology evolves or new urban challenges emerge. The open-data foundation ensures that startups, researchers and civic hackers can build their own tools on top of the city's datasets.
The immediate roadmap appears to focus on scaling what already works: more sensor nodes, broader transit-priority corridors and deeper integration of the WindyGrid platform with other city systems. Chicago has not announced a formal completion date for the Array of Things installation, but the trajectory points toward a connected city that measures and responds to conditions in real time.
